On March 12th, 2021 Mitsui & Co. Plastics Ltd. (“Mitsui & Co. Plastics”, Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, President & CEO: Katsunori Mori) entered into a business alliance agreement with Biomass Resin Holdings Co., Ltd. (“Biomass Resin Holdings”, Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, CEO: Kazuhito Kamiya) for sales in Japan and overseas of resins manufactured by Biomass Resin Holdings.

Biomass Resin Holdings group manufactures and develops compound materials of inedible rice with polyolefin resins, biodegradable resins, etc. In Japan, it focuses on manufacturing all domestically produced biomass materials. Domestically, it manufactures biomass materials at multiple locations centered on its subsidiary Biomass Resin Minamiuonuma Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Minamiuonuma, Niigata). Products using these materials, such as trash bags, shopping bags, cutlery (plastic utensils), and toys are now being distributed and sold in the market. Overseas, in addition to a Chinese licensed plant already in operation, Biomass Resin Holdings concluded with its Vietnamese joint venture a technology licensing agreement and a capital and business partnership agreement for biomass materials like those produced in Japan. Given the recent heightened environmental awareness, Biomass Resin Holdings is focusing on activities to promote the spread of biomass materials originating in Japan.

Amid mounting environmental concern triggered by the plastic waste issue, initiatives toward the circular economy are accelerating in countries worldwide. By providing broader solutions, including biomass-related solutions, which are particularly gaining attention, to brand owners, local governments, and other market participants, Mitsui & Co. Plastics will work to further strengthen its initiatives aimed at solving environmental issues.
